LearnIndonesian is built so you can learn without handing over more than the app needs. This page explains exactly what we collect, why, and what we do not do.
The short version
- You can use the entire app without an account.
- Voice recordings are scored and then discarded. We keep the number, not the audio.
- We do not sell your data, and there are no advertising or tracking SDKs in the app.
What we collect
Voice recordings
When you tap the microphone in a pronunciation exercise, LearnIndonesian records your voice so it can score how closely you match the line. The recording is sent over an encrypted connection to our server, transcribed and compared against the expected text, and then discarded. What we retain is the resulting score and, for that attempt, the transcript of what was heard so we can show you which words to work on. The audio itself is not stored, not used to train models, and not shared.
The microphone is only accessed when you tap to record. iOS will ask your permission the first time, and you can revoke it at any time in Settings → LearnIndonesian → Microphone. Declining it only disables pronunciation scoring; the rest of the app works normally.
Account information (optional)
If you create an account, we store your email address, a securely hashed password, and the display name you choose. This exists so your progress can follow you to another device. Without an account, nothing about you leaves the phone except the transient scoring requests described above.
Learning progress
For signed-in users we store which lessons and units you have completed, exercise results, pronunciation scores, flashcard scheduling data, your daily word goal, and your activity streak. This is what powers the level ladder and the activity grid on your profile.
Purchases
Subscriptions are processed by Apple. We never see or receive your payment details. We receive from Apple only a receipt confirming whether an active subscription exists, so the app can unlock Premium content.
Diagnostics
We may log technical errors (such as a failed request and the app version it came from) to keep the service working. These logs are not linked to advertising identifiers.
What we do not collect
No contacts, no photos, no location, no advertising identifier, no third-party analytics or ad networks, and no cross-app tracking of any kind.
Third parties we rely on
- Apple - App Store distribution and subscription billing.
- OpenAI - speech-to-text for pronunciation scoring and text-to-speech for dialogue audio. Audio sent for scoring is processed for that request only.
- Cloudflare - hosting of lesson audio files and delivery of our API.
These providers act as processors on our behalf. We do not sell or rent personal data to anyone.
How long we keep things
Voice recordings: not retained. Account and progress data: kept while your account is active, and deleted within 30 days of you deleting the account. Anonymous use leaves no persistent record on our side.
Your rights
You can reset all your progress from inside the app (Profile → Reset progress), and you can delete your account and everything attached to it by emailing us. Depending on where you live, you may also have the right to access, correct, export, or restrict processing of your data - write to us and we will action it. If you are in the EU or UK, our lawful basis is performance of the contract (delivering the lessons you asked for) and legitimate interest (keeping the service running securely).
Children
LearnIndonesian is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from them. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we will remove it.
Changes
If this policy changes materially, we will update the date above and note the change in the app before it takes effect.
